One of the traditions of Studio A is is to seek out and acquire fascinating artifacts with a story to tell. Here, we offer a spinning wheel or "charkha". This particular form was both a tool and a powerful symbol, as Mahatma Gandhi hoped that widespread use of the charkha would assist the peoples of India to achieve self sufficiency and independence from the British. It was even included on early versions of the Indian national flag. The availability of these vintage charkhas is very limited. This Charkha is over a 100 yrs old and is a found object in the villages throughout India. There will be inherent cracks, splits and the possibility of a few small pieces of missing wood. When these are prepared for export to Studio A they are only cleaned; there are no repairs done at any time prior to packing. We only select the Charkhas that retain as much of their original characteristics.
