The geometric patterns on the Dunmore metal trays and pillow are inspired by 18th-century buttons on men's clothing in Colonial Williamsburg's amazing collection of period costumes. Many buttons were gilt, some were mother of pearl, and others used silver or gold-wrapped cord to create starbursts and other interesting patterns. Such gorgeous buttons enabled a fashionable aristocrat like Lord Dunmore, last royal governor of Virginia, to be resplendent as a peacock when he entertained Virginian constituents at his Williamsburg palace.
