The Zaria statue comes to us from the Boulez tribe located in Ghana and the Cote d'Ivoire. The statue’s namesake city is a trading nexus that connected Western art and culture with Saharan Africa. This exposure added sophistication to the tribe’s image making talents. Here, our beautiful female figure displays traditional body scarification and ceremonial clothing. Sculptures like these are renowned for their refinement, pictorial diversity and the labor they represent.
