The Ladas statue personifies competition, rivalry and sport via the struggle of two sporting male figures. One pushes down with great effort. He is matched by a second figure who pushes up from below. This clash of opposing forces is depicted in the vigorous, distorted manner of allegorical fighters or a George Bellows boxer. The artist simplifies and stylizes the images by eliding some details in order to redistribute the sculptural balance and overall effect of compression poised for release.
